Flooring FAQs: Straight Answers Before You Get in Touch

For kitchens, hallways and anywhere water gets, yes. For dry rooms on a tighter budget, laminate is a fair choice.

Sheet vinyl is one flexible piece from a roll. LVT is separate planks or tiles with more realistic texture and better dent resistance.

LVT first, textured laminate second. Real wood works if you accept some scratching and choose a brushed, matt finish. For carpet, pick a cut-pile twist and avoid loops.

Carpet is warmer and quieter. Laminate and wood are easier to keep dust-free. Many homes choose carpet upstairs and hard floors down.

Sometimes. The old floor must be firm, flat and dry, and the added height must work at doors. Carpet is always removed.

Carpet, underlay and loose floors, yes. Well-bonded tiles can sometimes stay. We uplift and dispose of old floors, as part of a new floor or as a job on its own. See floor preparation.

We find out at the survey. Thin floors such as sheet vinyl and glue-down LVT need the smoothest base. Click floors and carpet tolerate more. We carry out levelling and screeding ourselves.

Often: loose boards, failed chipboard, lifting planks, split seams and carpet that needs re-stretching. We tell you first if a repair will show.

Moisture is measured before fitting. Depending on the reading, a surface damp-proof membrane may be applied, or fitting waits until the floor dries.

Tiles and adhesives from before 2000 can contain asbestos. They should be tested before anyone disturbs them.

Often a day per room for click floors over a good subfloor, and a couple of hours for a carpet. Longer with preparation, glue-down floors or herringbone. See flooring installation.

Clear small items, empty furniture that needs moving and disconnect appliances sitting on the floor area.

Yes for most LVT, laminate, engineered wood and low-tog carpet, within each product’s temperature limit. Solid wood is rarely suitable.

No. Floating floors need an expansion gap, which is covered either by refitted skirting or by beading. You choose.
