What is laminate?
Laminate is a plank with four layers: a backing, a dense fibreboard core, a high-resolution image of wood or stone, and a tough clear surface. Planks click together along their edges and float over underlay. Nothing is glued or nailed to the subfloor.
Wood-effect designs and plank styles
Modern laminate copies oak, ash, walnut and reclaimed timber closely. Better ranges add a texture that lines up with the printed grain and a bevel on each edge, so the floor reads as separate boards. Plank widths run from narrow strips to wide boards, and some ranges come in herringbone format.
Popular looks
Grey laminate remains the most requested colour family, from pale silver oak to darker slate greys. Natural and honey oak tones are close behind, and suit warmer schemes. Herringbone-format laminate gives a parquet look without the cost of timber blocks. Tile-effect laminate copies stone and slate in a plank or large tile format. If the room is a kitchen or a hallway by an outside door, look at the waterproof and water-resistant ranges first.
Durability and AC ratings
Laminate surfaces resist scratches, fading and stains well. Wear resistance is graded by an AC rating. AC3 suits normal household use. AC4 and AC5 are built for heavier traffic. Ratings and scratch-resistance claims are specific to each product, so check the range you choose.
Laminate and moisture
This is its weak point. The surface is water-resistant, but the fibreboard core swells if water gets into the joints. Wipe up spills promptly. Standard laminate is a poor choice for bathrooms and a risk in kitchens. Some ranges are sold as water-resistant for a stated number of hours. If you want a wood look in a wet room, LVT is the safer choice.
Best rooms for it
- Living rooms and dining rooms
- Bedrooms and landings
- Home offices, where it handles castor chairs better than soft wood finishes
- Rental properties that need a smart, hard-wearing floor at a sensible cost
Our guide for homeowners compares it with other options for each room.
Thickness and plank quality
Laminate planks commonly run from 7 mm to 12 mm thick. Thickness does not change how hard the surface is. That is the job of the wear layer and its AC rating. What thickness changes is how the floor feels and sounds. A thicker board has a stiffer core and a stronger click joint, so it feels more solid underfoot, sounds less hollow and copes better with small variations in the base. In a busy living room or a long hallway, a 10 mm or 12 mm board over a dense underlay is worth the extra. In a spare bedroom, 8 mm is usually plenty.
Joint design matters too. Better ranges have tighter, sealed or waxed joints that slow water getting into the core, which is where most laminate damage begins.
Underlay
Underlay is not optional. It cushions the floor, evens out tiny subfloor imperfections and cuts the hollow sound laminate can make. Over concrete it must include a moisture barrier. Upstairs and in flats, an acoustic underlay reduces noise for the room below. Over underfloor heating, a low-resistance underlay lets the heat through.
Subfloor preparation and fitting
The planks need a flat, dry, firm base. Dips let the joints flex until they break. Loose boards are fixed, high spots are taken down and hollows are filled. Planks are laid with an expansion gap at every wall, pipe and door frame, because laminate grows and shrinks with humidity. The gap is hidden under skirting or beading. Door frames are undercut so planks slide beneath them. The full process is on the flooring installation page, and larger subfloor problems are covered under floor preparation.

Laying direction and doorways
Planks normally run along the longest wall or towards the main window, which makes a room look longer and hides the joints in the light. Because the whole floor floats as one sheet, long runs need room to move. Manufacturers set a maximum length and width for a single floor, and most ask for an expansion break at doorways between rooms. The break is covered by a slim threshold strip. Skipping it is the most common reason a laminate floor lifts or peaks in summer.
More detail
Underfloor heating
Most laminate is suitable for water-based underfloor heating within a stated surface temperature, commonly 27°C. Electric systems need checking against the product guidance. Tell us which system you have.
Cleaning and maintenance
Vacuum or sweep. Clean with a well-wrung mop or a laminate spray cleaner. Never wet-mop or steam-clean. Use felt pads and a doormat. Laminate cannot be sanded, so deep damage means replacing planks.
How it compares
Against LVT
Laminate is harder, usually cheaper and quick to fit. Luxury vinyl is waterproof at the surface, quieter and better for kitchens and hallways.
Against engineered wood
Engineered wood is real timber that can be refinished and adds character with age. Laminate resists scratches better day to day and costs considerably less. The choice is between authenticity and economy.
What affects the cost
- Plank quality, thickness and AC rating
- Underlay type
- Subfloor preparation
- Removing carpet or an old floor
- Beading, or removing and refitting skirting boards
- Door trimming and thresholds
- Room shape, and herringbone-format planks if chosen
Laminate questions
Can it go in a kitchen?
A water-resistant range can, with care. Standard laminate is a risk near sinks and appliances.
Why does some laminate sound hollow?
Thin planks over cheap underlay. Thicker boards and a dense underlay solve it.
How long does fitting take?
An average room over a sound subfloor is usually a day. The packs should sit in the room for around 48 hours beforehand to adjust.
Which areas do you cover?
Every part of Ipswich and the nearby towns.
